WORK FROM HOME IS HARD FOR SOME

The number of Americans who now work from home has jumped 40%  + since 2000. As technology continues to evolve (enabling new access on mobile, social and collaboration), we can expect more growth in working from home.

While the work from home lifestyle brings significant perks, it’s not without challenges. You may not deal with the daily commute or rush-hour traffic, but there’s a new set of struggles that are unique to the home office. The following is a breakdown of the top four pitfalls associated with working from home and how to overcome them.

 When You Work From Home You Can’t Stay Focused

It’s not easy to stay focused in the face of countless distractions, from the television to the dirty dishes waiting in the kitchen. And when you’re brand new to working at home, the first danger is that it’s hard to feel like you’re working, simply because you don’t associate your home environment with being at work. Some people are experts at multitasking, easily alternating between work and household tasks or other distractions throughout the day. However, if you find your work productivity is suffering, you’ll need to come up with a more formal structure for your day. After all, you wouldn’t iron your clothes during the day if you were back at the office.

In an ideal case, you should create a dedicated area as your office (preferably with a door so you can shut out unwanted distractions). At the very least, carve out a corner of a room just for work, so going there signals your brain that it’s time to get serious. If you find yourself stuck from time to time, try changing your environment by working at the café for an hour or taking a short walk outside. A change in scenery can bring you new focus.

WHERE DO YOU WORK AT HOME?

When you’re working at a traditional office job, everyone seems to understand your work schedule. You don’t get many personal calls during the day. You’re not expected to handle all the daily errands. However, all those boundaries go out the window when you work from home.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take advantage of the flexibility that comes with working from home. But you should think about how easy it is to have time ripped from your workday. Just because you work from home doesn’t mean your job is any less real than your office counterparts. The key here is to respect your own time and your schedule — because no one else will respect your boundaries if you don’t respect them first.

What’s the stereotype of work from home people? Sleeping in, working in pajamas and easy days. However, the reality is usually far from that. People who work from home often work longer days simply because there’s no separation between work and home. When you’re working from home, you don’t pack up your computer; you don’t drive away from the office. Without a natural stopping point, the day gets longer and it’s harder to put aside work.

 With most jobs, there’s always going to be more work to do. We want you to write only one blog a day and our Prosperity Team will even help you with that! This means you need to self-regulate and be disciplined about setting a boundary between your work and personal life. This doesn’t have to be every night. However, if you’re serious about working from home for the long haul, you’ve got to make the lifestyle sustainable. And that means you’ll need time away from the computer and stress of work.

Many people don’t realize just how much they miss the day-to-day social interaction of the office until it’s gone.

This is an exciting time as technology is giving people more freedom to carve out their own workstyles and career paths. Don’t let these pitfalls deter you. If you want to venture out on your own as an independent worker or just telecommute from home a few days a week, go for it. Just be mindful that there are unique challenges associated with working from home, ones you probably never would have thought about while in the office.

Dammit, I think I looked older than all of them when I was 14.  Isn’t it enough that you destroy us at every sport except swimming?  You’ve got to look young forever too?

I was cracking up when I saw this video clip, because I’ve got a great story about the first time I met Lorina Noble(far right above), one of the badass, hot, young looking moms David was talking to in the video, at the first Empower Network event in Atlanta.

I’ll get to that in a minute though, first let’s go over how powerful this video clip is, and how when you grasp this one simple concept it will take years off your learning curve in your business.

Trying to make everything perfect before you start just means you are going to be sitting on your ass until you die.  You might as well order your tombstone engraving now:

Died broke waiting for the perfect moment to get started.  If only he would have had 100 more years to put on the finishing touches.  R.I.P.”

There is no one that has had massive success, ever in history, that hasn’t done a lot of things wrong along the way.

The Empower Network was launched out of a hotel room with a handful of people in it, and a website that didn’t work.

The first employee worked for David Sharpe from his kitchen table.

A million other things went wrong…

but look what it has become.

The reason is simple.

The “Double D’s” had a vision that surpassed their current reality, and they took massive action until the reality surpassed their vision, and then they made the vision bigger.

You should probably read that last statement five times or more, because when you do you will discover another secret of progressive success, that will keep you from ever “getting stuck.”

(We’ll get more into that concept in the future)

A rocket that is getting sent to the moon is off course over 90% of the time.  Making constant adjustments, of a fast moving object, are what brings it in to its desired destination.

You Can’t Steer A Parked Car

Some of you that are reading this are waiting for the perfect time to take action and get started.  You are waiting for a time when it is the perfect moment to pull out your credit card and buy the viral blogging system.

Maybe you have already made the decision to join, and you are trying to make the perfect plan before you take that first step and get started.

You can’t steer a parked car.

It feels good to take that first step.

I remember a time when I didn’t listen to those feelings, and I ended up wrapping my knee around a power-pole snowboarding at 30mph, and two surgeries later I had ruined my senior year of basketball.

I also remember a time when I was in the shower with the woman that is now my wife, and I made a decision at that moment that changed the course of my life forever, for the better.

I’m damn happy I listened to my instincts, and made the right choice.

Think back and remember a time in your life when you were in the right place at the right time, faced with a powerful decision, and you made the right choice?

Was your heart beating fast?

Where were you?

How did you feel?

What made you know that you were making the right choice?

I can’t tell you what you are feeling right now, but I can tell you that if something inside of you is telling you that you need to be a part of this movement, that it is time to listen.

It’s time to start taking massive action, get some results, and THEN you can worry about details.

Can You Achieve Your Goals?

Some People Achieve Their Goals

These barriers to success are easy to overcome, but only when you know they’re there. Why do some people achieve their goals while others fail? I believe it’s because successful people manage to overcome five barriers that, in many cases, guarantee failure. Here are those barriers and how to overcome them:

1. Uninspiring Goals

When most people set goals, they envision a “thing,” such as a particular amount of money, an object (like a new car), or a specific achievement (like writing a book). Unfortunately, these “things I’m gonna get or do” goals don’t appeal to the core of what motivates you, because they miss the point that what you’re actually seeking in life and work is the POSITIVE EMOTIONS that you believe those things will produce.

Fix: Rather than envisioning a “thing” as your goal, envision–with all the strength in your imagination–how you will feel when you achieve the goal. That way, you’ll be inspired to do whatever it takes (within legal and ethical bounds) to achieve that goal.

2. Fear of Failure

If you’re afraid of failing, you won’t take the necessary risks required to achieve your goal. For example, you won’t make that important phone call, because you’re afraid that you’ll be rebuffed. Or you won’t quit your dead-end job and start your own business because you’re afraid that you might end up without any money.

Fix: Decide–right now!–that failure, for you, is a strictly temporary condition. If things don’t go the way you’d like, it’s only a setback that, at most, delays your eventual success. In other words, accept the fact that you’ll sometimes fail, but treat that failure as an unavoidable (yet vital) component in your quest.

3. Fear of Success

In many ways, this fear is even more debilitating than the fear of failure. Suppose you achieved something spectacular, like enormous wealth. What if it didn’t make you happy? What then? What if you ended up losing all of it? What then? Would your friends start acting weird? Would your family be envious? Such thoughts (and they’re common) can cause even a highly motivated person to self-sabotage.

Fix: Decide that you’re going to be happy and grateful today and happy and grateful in the future, no matter what happens. Rather than focus on possible problems, envision how wonderful it would be to be able to help your friends and family achieve THEIR goals. (Hint: Watch the last season of the TV series Entourage!)

4. An Unrealistic Timetable

Most people vastly overestimate what they can do in a week and vastly underestimate what they can do in a year. Because of this, most people try to cram too many action items into the short term rather than spacing out activities over the long term. The inability to get all the short-term steps accomplished creates discouragement and the impression that the final goal is slipping away.

Fix: As you list the activities and steps required to achieve a goal, schedule only the 20% of the activities that will produce 80% of your results. (I explain more about this in the post The Secret of Time Management.) Beyond that, set ambitious long-term timetables, but always leave some “wiggle room” when you plan short term.

5. Worrying About “Dry Spots”

It’s easy to get discouraged when you reach a point at which nothing you do seems to advance you toward your goal. For example, suppose you’re trying to master a certain skill. You make swift progress at first but then, after a while, it seems as if you’re not doing any better, or maybe a little worse. Some people use these “plateaus” or “dry spots” as an excuse to give up and therefore fail.

Fix: Whenever you reach a plateau or dry spot, it’s time to celebrate rather than give up. A plateau is almost always a sign that you’re on the brink of a major breakthrough, if you just have the patience to stick with it and trust that you’ll eventually achieve your goal.
